Lips, Lips, Lips Orange County: How to Get the Ones You Want

If you’ve been thinking about getting lip filler, you are not alone. Lips have become the #1 dermal filler treatment area, and Juvéderm is the #1 filler brand used in this area (and the #1 filler brand we use at Lotus Medical Aesthetics) Orange County. Dr. Malecki is the Medical Director for Allergan Aesthetics Newport Beach, the makers of Juvéderm. Needless to say, he is an expert Botox and Juvéderm injector and leads the creation of training curriculum for physicians and injectors across the US.

So, what’s the #1 request with this #1 treatment area? Natural results. Below is a great before and after of natural results. The upper needed much love and the lower lip needed to be more symmetric.

Lips immediate before and after

We’ve all seen lips that were not done well, and we’ve heard the terms “duck lips” or “sausage lips.” So, how do you get the natural-looking results you want? It starts with ensuring you see an aesthetic specialist, like Dr. Malecki, who has a thorough understanding of lip anatomy.

Lip anatomy

When Dr. Malecki assesses your lips, he will be looking at different elements to see how they may be enhanced to create the ideal lip shape and volume for your unique face. An experienced injector, like Dr. Malecki, will look at proportions to determine what may be right for you.

·      The upper lip has three central bumps, called tubercles, and the lower lip has two. These should be appropriately volumized

·      The border of the lips is called the vermillion border. It’s important that the border is well-defined to help enhance the prominence of the lips

·      The Cupid’s bow is the curved border in the middle of the upper lip. Again, this should be adequately defined

·      The philtrum is the small depression that runs from the midline upper lip to the base of the nose. When this is appropriately volumized, it can help add structure to the lips

·      The oral commissures are the corners of the lips, which can become downturned and also start to spread out over time

·      The height of the bottom lip is generally greater than that of the upper lip (at a ratio of 1.6 to 1, known as the golden ratio), though there are variations depending on ethnicity and facial structure

·      The width of the nose and width of the chin should be roughly equal to the width of the central two-thirds of the lower lip

·      When viewed from the side, the upper lip should slightly (by 2mm) project out further than the lower lip

Determining your goals

Over time, lips lose volume, shape and definition. Vertical lines may also start to develop in the lips due to loss of collagen and elastin over time. For some clients, the goal is correction. They want to address age-related changes and restore their lips to how they appeared years earlier.

For other clients, the goal is beautification. They want to enhance the size and shape of their lips to fit a more aesthetic ideal.

Just as natural lips vary greatly from person to person, so do lip goals. At Lotus Medical Aesthetics, we assess your unique facial features and provide recommendations based on what’s important to you. Together, we can create the results YOU want.

How lip fillers work

There are different types of lip fillers that can be used in different ways to achieve your goals. For example, there are fillers specifically designed to add more subtle volume, or smooth out those vertical lines within the lips. There are also fillers designed for plumping and accentuating pout.

Juvéderm is the #1 filler brand for the lips and Dr. Malecki uses different fillers in the Juvéderm Collection to create customized results. Like all hyaluronic acid fillers, results with Juvéderm are not permanent. Generally, they last about one year. In both the clinical trials and in our practice, people have expressed very high satisfaction with results.
