Chin is in: 5 things to know about this filler trend Costa Mesa
While cheeks and lips remain top dermal filler treatment areas, the chin is quickly gaining popularity. The chin is a key facial landmark and plays a major role in the overall shape of your face. Across ethnicities and genders, the heart-shaped face is considered ideal, and using filler to contour the chin can help create this shape.
Dr. Malecki at Lotus Medical Aesthetics Newport Beach is an expert in chin injections, primarily using Juvéderm Voluma. In fact, Dr. Malecki is the Medical Director for the makers of Juvéderm and Botox, for Allergan Aesthetics. He leads the creation of the training curriculum for physicians and injectors across the US. Here are five things he wants you to know about filler injections in the chin.
1. Chin filler doesn’t just make your chin bigger.
Some people hear about injecting their chin and think, “why would I want a bigger chin?” For some people, particularly men, they may want to increase the size of the chin for a stronger, more sculpted profile. But there are also more nuanced ways to use filler to create a more aesthetically pleasing face shape. For example, filler can be injected at the tip of the chin to elongate and taper the chin in women who have more of a square-shaped chin and desire a more feminine, contoured shape. Below is a great example of this concept. This is a before and after of younger female with small and more square chin who was treated with Juvéderm Voluma
2. Facial proportions matter.
An expert injector, like Dr. Malecki, considers overall proportions of the face. On the profile view, the Aesthetic E-line is a line drawn from the tip of the nose to the bottom lip to the tip of the chin. This line should be at a specific angle. Filler can help optimize the angle by enhancing chin projection.
Depending on gender, the chin should be a specific width as well. Filler can help ensure the width is as close to ideal as possible. If a woman’s chin is too wide, for example, filler can be used to elongate and narrow the chin.
3. Aging can impact the chin.
We all experience bone loss as we age. As the jawbone shrinks, we may notice jowls and sagging around our necks. It’s like a collapsing tent pole. If we put the tent pole back in place with filler, the tent will smooth out.
Also with aging, chin creases can develop as we lose collagen. The mentalis muscle can become hyperactive to compensate for sagging skin, resulting in a pebbly or dimpled appearance. Chin filler can help counteract these processes. Below is a great before and after of a more mature chin with some of the aforementioned aging elements. The chin looks more harmonious after treatment without an disrupting aging shadows above and around the chin.
4. Results can last up to a year.
With Juvéderm Voluma, results have been shown to last up to a year, which is impressive given that the lower face is highly mobile as we talk and eat throughout the day.
5. Optimizing the chin may involve injections in other areas.
It’s always important to consider the whole face when doing filler injections. In tandem with optimizing chin size and shape, the lips may need to be brought into balance as well. It’s also common to inject the jawline to achieve optimal contour. Below is a before and after example of a patient who needed foundational treatment in the cheek with Voluma and very small amount of Voluma (less than one syringe) in her chin to balance it out. She looks rested and slimmer.
